Matas' career-high performance leads Badgers over No. 5 Bold

In triumphant fashion the Badgers defeated the No. 5 TMU Bold, earning their sixth straight win.

On Sunday, Jan. 12 the Brock Badgers men's basketball team faced the TMU Bold and emerged victorious 74-66 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre.

Fourth-year forward Michael Matas had a complete performance for the Badgers with a game-high and career-high 28 points on 50 per cent shooting and 10/10 from the free-throw line with six rebounds, while Jalen Edwards was the other Badger in double figures with 11 points and two three-pointers.

Brock began the first quarter with a fierce defensive effort as they racked up four steals and a block, building the crucial momentum for a big second quarter.

The Badgers clawed back after being down by nine points during the first frame and tied the contest up 29-29 thanks to second-year guard Nemanja Sarkanovic drilling Brock's first three of the game.

In the third quarter, Brock was firing on all cylinders, going up 55-44 as they found their rhythm and nailed six threes in the quarter after previously only making a single three-pointer.

The Badgers then continued to close out the Bold as they played a complete fourth quarter, holding off the late surge by TMU.

Third-year wing Michael Okeke had a game-high three steals in the contest.

Brock finished the game shooting 35.4% from the field compared to TMU's 32.4%.

Up next, the Badgers will head to the Meridian Centre for the Paint the Meridian Red game on Friday, Jan. 17 at 8 p.m. where they will take on the McMaster Marauders. The last time they matched up, the Badgers battled and won 81-66 in Hamilton on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024. Tickets are available here and you can stream the action live on OUA.TV.
