Badgers handle business in tight road contest against Ridgebacks

Brock earned a nail-biting 75-69 win.

On Friday, Jan. 24, the Brock Badgers men's basketball team extended their season winning streak to nine games after its victory over the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Centre in Oshawa.

Second-year guards, Davanté Hackett and Anthony Heyes led the Badgers in scoring with 13 points apiece while Michael Matas recorded 11.

It was a tightly contested opening frame as the Badgers led 17-12 with both teams failing to gain a comfortable lead and leaving little room for error.

The second quarter saw back-and-forth action, but it was the points off turnovers and free throws that helped the Ridgebacks as Brock led 34-30 at halftime.

Brock came out quick and hungry and got to an eight-point lead, but Ontario Tech kept finding ways to stay in it. Despite the pressure, the Badgers remained ahead by a score of 49-44.

A nail-biting fourth frame had Ontario Tech hitting clutch buckets every time it felt like Brock was trying to run away with the game. However, it was Matas who recorded eight points in the frame to secure the win.

Jalen Edwards led the Badgers with seven rebounds while also contributing seven points.

In the field goal percentage department, it was Brock that led with 42.2 per cent to Ontario Tech's 38.6 per cent.

Next up, the Badgers will get a short break as they travel to Kingston for a battle against the Queen's Gaels at Athletics and Recreation Centre with tip-off scheduled for 6 p.m. In their last meeting, the Badgers lost narrowly 79-76 on March 2, 2024, in the Wilson Cup, but now look to get their revenge.
