Jaden Patterson (Virgil, Ont.) of the men's lacrosse team, Paige DeNeve (Zephyr, Ont.) of the women's rugby team and Ryan Facchini (Burlington, Ont.) of the men's baseball team have been named Brock University Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Oct. 5.
Patterson scored a combined 22 points across three games this past week, including a 10-point performance from five goals and five assists in Sunday's dominant 26-4 win over the Laurentian Voyagers. He recorded six points on Saturday, Oct. 4 against the unbeaten Nipissing Lakers, with three goals and three assists. The fifth-year attack added another six-point performance on Wednesday against the Toronto Varsity Blues, scoring four goals and two assists in the 14-12 victory. After this weekend, Patterson ranks fourth in the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association (CUFLA) in points and second in assists.
In Saturday's 60-28 victory over the York Lions, DeNeve, a fifth-year fly half, led all scorers totalling 15 points with one try and five converts. Her long run that resulted in a try in the 25th minute helped push the Badgers' lead to 29-0. Her kicking for territory, dominant attack and ability to play multiple positions made her a huge threat throughout the game and propelled the Badgers to 60 unanswered points to start the match.
Facchini delivered a productive day on the mound in the Badgers' 6-1 win over the Guelph Gryphons in the OUA West Regional Qualifier final on Saturday. The General Humanities major pitched all nine innings in Saturday's game, helping the Badgers clinch a spot in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Championship for the second consecutive year. The winning pitcher faced 34 batters, striking out 10 of them and allowing only one run. Facchini also showed strong command of the strike zone, delivering 78 strikes on 122 pitches for an impressive strike percentage of 64.
