Matas' strong performance, game winner powers Badgers over Lions

The Brock Badgers men's basketball team won on a game-winning shot in Toronto.

On Saturday, Feb. 15, Brock traveled to the Tait McKenzie Centre for an evening clash with the York Lions in which they won by a score of 67-65.

Fourth-year forward Michael Matas logged 20 points and six rebounds while Nathan Charles notched a season and game-high 13 rebounds.

Despite outshooting the Lions, the Badgers just could not find the bottom of the basket as York notched a higher field-goal percentage in the quarter to lead 19-12 after one.

It was a much better second frame for Brock as they displayed a great effort defensively, forcing four turnovers and earning three steals to limit York. Offensively, the Badgers shot 50 per cent to earn a 33-31 lead at halftime.

Like the previous frame, neither team gained a comfortable lead as they recorded similar statistics, both recording 17 points as the Badgers remained ahead by a score of 50-48.

From that point on, when Brock attempted to go on a burst, York would counter with timely buckets to keep the game close. However, Matas came up huge to convert on a game winner in the dying seconds.

Thierry Tshibola was the only other Badger to record double-digit points with 12 in the contest.

In the field-goal percentage department, York led with 40.6 per cent as opposed to Brock's 32.5 per cent.

Up next, Brock will host round one of the OUA playoffs against the Ontario Tech Ridgebacks at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at Bob Davis Gymnasium. This game can be streamed on OUA.tv. Tickets will be available starting on Monday, Feb. 17 at 10 a.m. at University Tickets.
