Adriana Martone (Barrie, Ont.) of the women's swimming team and Devin Cooney (Kanata, Ont.) of the men's volleyball team have been named Brock University Athletes of the Week for the period ending Sunday, Jan. 18.
Martone accounted for two of Brock's 11 podium finishes over the weekend at the U of T Winter Invitational at Athletic Centre Varsity Pool in Toronto. The second-year swimmer finished first in the 50-metre breaststroke event, tying her school record with a time of 32 seconds and 80 milliseconds. This was faster than her 32.92 time in the same event at the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Championships last year, where she earned a bronze medal. The Psychology student was not finished there, additionally claiming a second-place finish in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:39.62. Martone will look to improve on her impressive campaign at the Badger Invitational at Eleanor Misener Aquatic Centre on Saturday, Jan. 31, before competing at the OUA Championships at Athletic Centre Varsity Pool in Toronto from Thursday, Feb. 19 to Saturday, Feb. 21.
With a key two-game home stand against the RMC Paladins over the weekend, Cooney played a major role in both wins at Bob Davis Gymnasium. In the first game on Friday, Jan. 16, the fourth-year outside hitter earned a season-high 25 points in Brock's 3-1 (25-14, 24-26, 25-14, 25-17) decision, tallying 18 kills, six service aces and a block. In the first frame, Cooney set the tone with four of Brock's six service aces en route to a 25-14 set win. After narrowly dropping the second, Cooney responded with a seven-kill third set to lead Brock to a 25-14 decision. In the fourth and final frame, the Business Communication major notched six kills and two servce aces to push the Badgers over the finish line, taking the set 25-17 and the match overall. In Saturday's contest, Cooney delivered nine points from six kills, two service aces and a block as Brock took care of business in straight sets 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-15) over RMC.
