U SPORTS Top 10: Women's volleyball claws back to No. 5, men's basketball climbs to No. 8

Two Brock Badgers teams continue their rise in the U SPORTS Top 10 rankings, with the women's volleyball and men's basketball teams each moving up a spot. 

Women's Volleyball (12-2) - No. 5

After a one-week hiatus, the Brock Badgers women's volleyball team has found their way back to the No. 5 spot in the U SPORTS Top 10 rankings.  

Returning home to Bob Davis Gymnasium for a weekend double header against the RMC Paladins, the Badgers women's volleyball team won both of their matchups. The Badgers were victorious in the first game on Friday, Jan. 16 by a scoreline of 3-0 (25-23, 25-12, 26-24), with Emily Foest scoring a match-high 12 points from 11 kills and one service ace. Alaina Larochelle went a perfect 5-for-5 on attacks, while Sera Leung orchestrated the offence with a career-high 28 assists. Tight first and third sets sandwiched a commanding second frame, where the Badgers hit .500 while holding the Paladins to .000. Brock won the kills battle 38-15 and also excelled in serving and blocking, topping the RMC 7-3 in aces and 10-3 in blocks. 

Saturday's rematch saw the Badgers again winning 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-18) over the RMC Paladins. Emma Baruchelli scored a match-high 11.5 points from 10 kills, one service and one block assist, while Kara Rakamnuaykit added a career-high eight kills. Additionally, Jenna Peters helped run the offence by recording a career-high 33 assists. The Badgers spread the wealth throughout the contest as 11 different players registered a kill. Brock also converted a high rate of their offensive chances, posting a season-high .397 attack percentage compared to just .015 for RMC. 

The Badgers look to build off this momentum as they head to the Goldring Centre in Toronto for two games against the Toronto Varsity Blues. The first is scheduled for Friday, Jan. 23 at 5:30 p.m., with the second slated for the following day at 4 p.m.

The Brock Badgers men's basketball team has reached its highest ranking of the season. 

Originally scheduled for Friday, the Badgers won a closely contested overtime thriller 84-80 on Sunday, Jan. 18 at C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse in Thunder Bay, Ont. Andrew McKenna led the way for Brock, scoring a team-high 22 points, four rebounds and three assists on 7-for-11 from the field, including three from beyond the arc. Anthony Heyes, Michael MatasIsaiah Bujdoso and Nemanja Sarkanovic also finished in double-digit scoring. After a tie at the end of regulation, the Badgers outscored the Thunderwolves 10-6 in overtime, with Anthony Heyes scoring seven points, including the final free throws to seal the win. The Badgers made better use of their three-point opportunities, converting 30.3 per cent to the Thunderwolves' 25.7. 

The Badgers look for the series sweep tonight as they take on the Lakehead Thunderwolves at C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse in Thunder Bay, Ont., at 7 p.m.
