The Brock Badgers men's basketball team began their 2026-27 campaign with a commanding win.
The Badgers start at 1-0 (W-L) after a one-sided victory against the Algoma Thunderbirds in Sault St. Marie, Ont. on Friday Oct. 23 with a final score of 100-53.
Brock was led by a 28-point performance from first-year guard Zach Hawley, who shot 8-13 from the three point line in a strong OUA regular-season debut.
The game started close, with both teams trading baskets throughout the first quarter, until the Badgers were able to pull away near the end of the frame to lead 27-19.
In the second quarter, Brock's offensive firepower began to take over the game, with the Badgers outscoring Algoma 29-5 in the quarter. A 12-0 run to end the half, including a buzzer beater tip-in by Emmanuel Oko-Oboh, extended their lead to 56-24.
Brock held onto their lead throughout the third quarter, outscoring the Thunderbirds 19-15. A late three-pointer with nine seconds remaining by Magnus Carlos gave Brock a cushion heading into the final quarter. From there, they were able to extend their large lead, putting up 25 points to close out the win.
The Badgers shot 48 per cent from the three-point line, helping them pull away from Algoma and ultimately take home the win.
Brock will look to open their home schedule with a win next weekend as they host the TMU Bold in their home opener in Bob Davis Gymnasium. The game is set for Friday, Oct. 30 with an 8 p.m. tip-off. Tickets available for purchase on University Tickets. The game can also be seen on OUA.tv.
