Badgers stifled by No. 9 Gryphons

The Brock women's hockey team fell short to the Guelph Gryphons on Friday, Oct. 30 at Canada Games Park.

The Badgers were handed a 2-0 decision despite sustained zone pressure throughout the game and a perfect night on the penalty kill.

Brock came out against the No. 9 nationally ranked Guelph team that applied pressure early, forcing multiple turnovers.

The Gryphons struck first, scoring five minutes into the game on a rebound that got behind the Brock defence.

Brock generated several chances on the power play, including three shots in tight, but could not tie the game. Guelph's defense closed tightly in the neutral zone to limit Brock despite consist Badger pressure, ending the first period at a 1-0 score.

In the second frame, Brock put up eight shots on net, including a look by Riley Gillies that was turned away by the glove and Ellie French tipping a puck that beat everything but the post. Brock goaltender Hali Lawrence gave everything she had, rejecting any opportunity that came her way in the second period, with help from the strong Badger penalty kill unit that killed all four penalties on the night.

Guelph doubled the lead in the third after a misdirected point shot found its way to the back of the net. Brock pushed back late, finding momentum after a well executed penalty kill and the goalie at with 90 seconds to play. Guelph held on to get the upper hand in a hard-fought match.

Brock will look to strike back in the second game of a home-and-home with Guelph on Saturday, Oct. 31, with puck drop set for 7:30 p.m. The game can be streamed live on OUA.tv.
