Fennema drops season high as Badgers pick up win on home court

The Brock Badgers women's basketball team have picked up their first home win of the season.

On the second night of a back-to-back at Bob Davis Gymnasium, sharp-shooting guard Hailey Fennema's 20 points helped propel the Badgers past the Toronto Varsity Blues for an 89-54 victory on Saturday, Oct. 31.

Fennema was supported by veteran guard Ava Stranges who dropped 14 points of her own to go along with a game-high five assists, while Kaleah Gosse chipped in on both sides of the ball with 12 points and five steals.

The two teams exchanged buckets throughout the opening quarter, with the visitors holding a slim 19-17 lead after the opening period. Shailah Adams led the Badgers early offensive charge, scoring seven points in the frame on an efficient 3-3 shooting from the field.

After another tightly contested 10 minutes of play, Brock was able to jump out to a 43-40 halftime lead, thanks in large part to a quick 7-0 run to open the quarter.

The hosts began to assert their dominance after the halftime break, holding the Blues to just four points on 16.7 per cent shooting in the frame, with Fennema's eight points helping the Badgers extend their lead to 23 entering the final quarter.

Brock did not let their foot off the gas to close out the game, hounding the Blues on defence to secure a commanding team victory.

The Badgers ability to capitalize off of their opponent's mistakes was crucial in gaining separation throughout the second half, as they scored 39 points off of Toronto turnovers, compared to the Blues' eight.

Up next, the Badgers finish off their three-game home stand by battling the Ottawa Gee-Gees on Friday, Nov. 6., at Bob Davis Gymnasium in their Space Jam theme game. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. with tickets for the game available for purchase on University Tickets. The game can also be seen on OUA.tv.
