Bonisteel shines as Badgers fall in double overtime thriller to Thunderwolves

Five periods were needed to decide Game 2 of an Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Round 1 series.

The Brock Badgers men's hockey team, the No. 6 seed in the West division, dropped a tight 3-2 double overtime decision to the No. 3 seed Lakehead Thunderwolves on Friday, Feb. 20 at Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay, Ont., forcing a third and deciding game in the series.

"I am extremely proud of our team's resilience," said head coach TJ Manastersky. "To be shorthanded seven times, including three times in overtime to just two power plays is not ideal. It's not what you expect to see in a playoff game, but that's what happens up here."

The Badgers were led in scoring by Alexis Cournoyer and Matt Duarte, who eached scored one goal, while Ryan Stepien notched another assist, giving him six in the series.

Second-year goaltender Ben Bonisteel was a force in net, stopping 41 of 44 shots, including 13 in the first period to keep Lakehead off the board.

"Ben was rock solid all night, and you need your goalie to be your best penalty killer," Manatstersky said. "He did a great job."

The Badgers survived two early penalties before delivering the first blow off an interception from Stepien, which led to a goal from Cournoyer as he tapped the puck into the back of the net.

Two minutes into the second, the Thunderwolves capitalized on an odd-man rush, with Olivier Pouliot knotting the game at 1-1.

The third saw another early penalty for the Badgers, but they killed off the man advantage.

Brock then took the lead as Colby Saganiuk put a shot on net before Duarte came flying in to score on the rebound to give his team a 2-1 lead with just under 12 minutes to play.

Lakehead didn't back down, pulling their goalie and scoring the game-tying goal with just over a minute and a half remaining, sending the game to an extra frame.

In the first overtime period, four more penalties were handed out. The Badgers fended off two more Thunderwolves' power plays before getting a chance of their own, but they were unable to take advantage.

The Badgers took a third penalty late in the frame, which was set to resume in the second overtime.

Brock's penalty killing magic came to an end in the fifth period as Lakehead scored 45 seconds in to seal the victory and force Game 3.

Penalties were the story of the night, with Brock killing six of seven while Lakehead took only two.

The Badgers will take on the Thunderwolves once more at Fort William Gardens in Thunder Bay, Ont., for a winner-take-all Game 3 of this Round 1 best-of-three series on Saturday, Feb. 21 at 7 p.m. The game can be seen on OUA.tv.

"We prepared for a three-game series and this is what we get," said Manastersky. "We are built for this. Tomorrow is an exciting challenge to bounce back, and we can't wait."
