The Brock women's hockey team saw their playoff run come to an end as they fell to the No. 1 seed in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA
) West Division.
The No. 5 OUA West seed Badgers dropped the second and final game of an OUA quarterfinal matchup 3-2 to the No. 4 nationally ranked Laurier Golden Hawks on Friday, Feb. 27 at Canada Games Park.
Avery Diljee and
Ellie French each found the back of the net for Brock, while
Megan Thiessen stopped 21 of 24 shots she faced in the contest.
"At the start of this season, this team set a goal: make the playoffs," said head coach
Margot Page. "Not only did we achieve that; we went beyond it. Tonight, they fought with everything they had to try to extend this season."
Playing shorthanded was a major story for the Badgers in the first period, with six minutes of penalties being handed out to the home side.
Brock allowed a goal on the double-minor from
Moi Moi Luu but were able to limit the damage there as Thiessen stopped eight of nine shots faced in the frame.
With 33 seconds remaining in the first, Diljee made a move with the puck to get around a Laurier defender before burying top shelf to knot the game up at one.
The first penalty of the second period was assessed to Laurier. The Badgers applied countless pressure but could not solve the Golden Hawks' netminder Kayla Renaud.
Laurier killed off the Brock power play and were soon after rewarded with one themselves, capitalizing on the opportunity by scoring to take back momentum.
With 1:40 remaining in the second, the visitors scored once again to take a 3-1 advantage as they outshot the Badgers 9-7 in the middle frame.
With eight minutes remaining in the third, Wolsey found French in front of the net, and she made no mistake, tapping the puck home to cut the deficit to one.
The majority of the remainder of the game was spent in Laurier's end as Brock generated numerous scoring chances, but Renaud shut the door as the Golden Hawks held on to take a 3-2 victory.
"There was no quit and there was no fear," Page said. "They showed heart, compete, and belief in one another. We are so incredibly proud of this group because of that."
Penalties were a major decider in the outcome as Brock received eight penalty minutes to just two for Laurier. The Golden Hawks capitalized on their opportunities, scoring twice on the power play.
The Badgers finished off a strong season with their first playoff berth since 2022-23, earning an appearance in the OUA quarterfinal

Page reflected on the impact left behind by her senior players.
"To our graduating players: thank you. You built and protected a culture that matters," she said. "You showed what it means to lead, to sacrifice and to represent this program the right way. Our returning players will bottle that up and continue that legacy that you have left."
