Brock men’s hockey team puts up valiant fight, drops Game 3 to Bold

The Brock Badgers battled all series, pushing their opponents to the brink.

In a decisive Game 3 in an Ontario University Athletics (OUA) quarterfinal series, the No. 6 West seed Brock men's hockey team dropped a close 2-1 decision to the No. 2 West TMU Bold on Sunday, March 1 at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto.

"I continues to be impressed with how this team responds to adversity," said head coach TJ Manastersky. "To have scored a goal that was ruled not to have gone in is difficult to handle in an elimination game. We kept our composure and discipline and kept fighting until the end; that was a microcosm of our whole season."

Stephen Calisti was the lone goal scorer for the Badgers as they made their comeback attempt in the third period, while Ben Bonisteel made 18 saves in net to keep his team within striking distance.

In the first period, the Badgers earned the game's first power-play opportunity, but they were unable to generate any sustained pressure.

Like the night before, the Bold capitalized with the man advantage, scoring with 31 seconds remaining to take a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Looking to find the tying goal in the second period, the Badgers provided more energy as they put 13 shots on net to just five from the Bold.

A scramble in front with seven minutes left in the frame initially appeared to result in a Brock goal. After review, officials ruled that a TMU skater had covered the puck in the crease, awarding the Badgers a penalty shot. Ryan Stepien was called upon but could not beat Kai Edmonds, losing control of the puck on his final move.

Penalty trouble defined the middle frame as two penalties were assessed to each side in under six minutes.

Midway through the third, the Bold added their second of the night off the stick of Jadan Raad.

Off an offensive-zone faceoff during 4-on-4 play, Jonah Boria found Calisti, who beat Kai Edmonds glove side with just under eight minutes remaining.

"Stephen was recruited to have an impact on the power play, add experience to our dressing room and develop his complete game," Manastersky said. "I'm happy for him that all of those objectives were accomplished."

A key stop by Bonisteel on a 2-on-1 with two minutes left gave the Badgers a chance to pull the goalie late, but they were unable to tally another goal.

The Badgers put pressure throughout, firing 31 shots compared to 20 from their opposition.

Penalties proved to be the difference as they could not score on three of their power-play chances, while the Bold went 1-for-3.

The Badgers can take pride in making it back to the playoffs after a one-year hiatus as they upset the No. 3 OUA West seed Lakehead Thunderwolves in the opening round.

Manastersky reflected on the impact of his seniors after the game.

"Our seniors have laid the foundation for our culture and have made significant contributions to our storied hockey program," he said. "Above all, they are exceptional people who have maximized their experience at Brock. I can't wait to see what they accomplish from here."
