Marty Calder completed his 24th season as head coach with the Brock men’s and women’s wrestling program, first becoming co-head coach of the varsity program in 2001.
The former two-time Olympian and Canadian University wrestling standout has continued to excel in the coaching ranks as he has become one of the top coaches in Canada over the past two decades.
During his time at Brock, Calder has been part of the Badgers wrestling dynasty, winning 28 national titles (16 men, 12 women) and 39 provincial titles (18 men, 21 women).
On the international level, he has had the opportunity to coach three-time Olympic Medalist Tonya Verbeek, World Champion Jessica MacDonald, Olympians Evan MacDonald and Saeed Azarbayjani, Canadian Senior Champions Michelle Fazzari and Ryan Weicker and Canadian Junior Champions Nick Rowe and Liisa Wainman.
Calder has been recognized by his peers in Canadian university sport, earning 44 Coach of the Year honours. He has been named OUA Men’s Coach of the Year 12 times while also earning OUA Women’s Coach of the Year honours 11 times. He has also been recognized at the national level, earning CIS/U SPORTS Men’s Coach of the Year 13 times and CIS/U SPORTS Women’s Coach of the Year eight times.
As a wrestler, the seven-time Senior national Champion represented Canada in the 1992 and 1996 Olympic Games. While at Brock, Calder was a five-time OUA champion and four-time CIAU champion and first team All-Canadian while leading his team to the first national championship in school history. He went on to win Brock Male Athlete of the Year three times. For his career performance he was inducted into the Brock Hall of Fame in 2003 along with the first CIAU national championship team which he was part of.
Originally from St. Catharines, Calder was a two-sport athlete growing up playing lacrosse and wrestling. He currently resides in Thorold with his family.
