VANCOUVER - The Brock University men's rowing team capped off the 2012 season with their fifth CURC National Championship in school history.
The Badgers won the banner by one point over the University of Victoria. Top three team point totals were Brock (101), UVic (100) and Western (96).
After finishing second on day one, the HWT Men's pair of Mark Alm (Grimsby, Ont.) and Tim Schrijver (Thedford, Ont.) battled hard and came out on top with a championship gold medal performance.
"It's really great to win a national banner as a men's team," said Tim Schrijver. "We have a great crew and the coaching staff is amazing so it is awesome to accomplish this together. It was an exciting culmination to the season coming down to the last few strokes of the last race of the day."
"A total team effort was put towards accomplishing our goal of winning the CU's banner, every result from our day was equally important," said Mark Alm. "We knew what we had to do, and despite a few setbacks during the day, we managed to rely on our training to come out on top."
The Brock men also had two silver medal finishes in the HWT Men's 8+ Fraser Berkhout (St. Catharines, Ont.), Eddie Vaughan (Lantzville, BC), Schrijver, Matt Wortley (Caledon, Ont.), Greg Theriault (Rothesay, NB), David DeGroot (St. Catharines, Ont.), Alm, Ben Cushnie (Welland, Ont.), coxie Ashley Niblett (Toronto, Ont.), and James Myers (Beamsville, Ont.) and Russell McKean (Fonthill, Ont.) in the LWT Men's 2x.
Finishing third overall were the LWT Men's 4+ of Cushnie, Myers, McKean, Grayson Gray (Thorold, Ont.) and Niblett, as well as Berkhout in the HWT Men's Single.
Rounding out the Brock men's results was Jordan Chew (Barrie, Ont.) who finished 2nd in the LWT Men's 1x B Final.
The Brock women's team had a strong finish to the season placing fifth overall.
The Badgers top result was the Women's 8+ Lindsey Brown (St. Catharines, Ont.), Cayley Firth (Ancaster, Ont.), Alicia Marconi (St. Catharines, Ont.), Jessica Bateman (St. Catharines, Ont.), Tiffany Rusch (Midland, Ont.), Sarah Miller (Caledon, Ont.), Jennifer Beaudette (St Andrews West, Ont.), Lindsay MacLean (St. Catharines, Ont.) and coxie Emily Vancise (St. Catharines, Ont.) who placed fifth overall.
Finishing in sixth place were Rusch and Teresa Hill (London, Ont.) in the LWT Women's 2x and Bateman, Beaudette, L. MacLean, Amy MacLean (St. Catharines, Ont.) and Vancise in the LWT Women's 4+.
Rounding out the Brock women's CURC results were the Women's Pair of Marconi and Firth who won the B Final. In the LWT Women's 1x, Hill was second in the B Final. Brown placed 4th in the HWT Women's 1x B Final.
