ISTANBUL, Turkey - At the 2011 World Wrestling Championships
held in Istanbul, Turkey, Brock's Tonya Verbeek and Jessica
Bondy MacDonald both medalled with Verbeek adding a silver medal
and MacDonald bronze.
"This is a great accomplishment for both our program's
wrestlers," said Brock head coach Marty Calder. "They have both
worked very hard in 2011 and have excelled on the international
stage. They now have one step to go at the Olympic Trials in
December leading up to the 2012 Olympics in England."
Verbeek, a two-time Olympic medalist, captured a silver medal
finishing with a 4-1 overall record. In her opening match she
defeated Russia's Mariya Gurova (W 0-1, 1-0, 1-1), She then
went on to defeat Mongolia's Nomin-erdene Batbaatar (W 5-0,
2-0), Azerbaidjan's Yuliya Ratkevich (W 0-1, 1-0, 3-0), and
Ukraine's Tetyana Lazareva (W 0-1, 3-1, 1-0) in the
semi-finals. In the finals she lost two rounds to one against
two-time Olympic Gold Medalist and nine-time World Champion Saori
Yoshida from Japan (L 1-0, 2-2, 3-2).
Jessica Bondy MacDonald captured a bronze medal at the worlds
after posting a 3-1 overall record. She posted victories against
Spain's Maria del Mar Serrano Barcelo (W pinfall 5-0),
China's Yanan Sun (W pinfall 5-0) and Japan's Mareka
Shidochi (W 6-1, 1-0) in the bronze medal match. Her lone loss came
against the eventual world champion from Russia Zamira Rakhmanova
(L 4-0, 6-4).
