Gutierrez-Sarabia, a second-year fencer, placed sixth out of 100 competitors at the Brock Open in senior men's épée and second among university fencers. The Critical Criminology major earned five victories in pool play, placing him as the No. 15 seed heading into the direct elimination round. From there, Gutierrez-Sarabia won three straight matches, including defeating the No. 2 seed Alan Yuchee Zheng, before falling in a highly contested quarter-final bout 15-11 to the eventual silver medalist Jonathan Chai.
