Gutierrez-Sarabia, a second-year fencer, earned a gold medal in men's épée at Winterfest in Waterloo on Saturday, Feb. 3. In pool play, the Critical Criminology major went a sparkling 7-0, finishing with an indicator of +18. This seeded him fourth into the single elimination round. Gutierez-Sarabia then won five straight matches, including a thrilling 15-14 win over the then No. 1 seed James Hong in the semifinals to capture his first-ever individual medal.
