The Brock University women's hockey team opened the 2013-14 OUA regular season with back-to-back road losses against the Nipissing Lakers and Laurentian Voyageurs.
The Badgers dropped the season opener Saturday to Nipissing by the score of 3-2 and could not solve Laurentian goaltender Laura Deller dropping a 3-1 decision Sunday afternoon.
Versus Nipissing, Brock would find themselves down 3-0 after one period with Jade Gauthier adding her first two goals of her career and Carly Marchment adding the other.
The Badgers fired 21 shots at Lakers starter Jacqueline Rochefort, before captain
Leigh Vanderveen (NOTL, Ont.) solved her 1:43 into the second period cutting the lead to two.
Melissa Hurrell (Caledon, Ont.) would make it a one goal game recording her first of her career with 13:36 remaining in the third period.
Brock would continue to pepper Rochefort in the third, but she stood tall finishing with 42 saves in the victory. Brock rookie
Jenna Sosnoski (New Dundee, Ont.) recorded 25 saves in the loss.
Against Laurentian the Badgers outshot the Voyageurs 52-21 but it Laura Deller coming up big between the pipes for LU registering 51 saves for the victory. Sosnoski recorded 18 saves in the loss.
Laurentian opened the scoring just 13 seconds into the opening period as Aoife Cox setup Julie Hebert for her first goal of her career.
After firing 22 shots in the first period against Deller, the Badgers would tie the game 3:06 into the second period as
Jessica Fickel (Fort Erie, Ont.) recorded her first of the campaign with
Jacqueline Kope (Pickering, Ont) and
Ally Graham (Thamesford, Ont.) adding assists.
With just 6:12 remaining in the third period, Victoria Medeiros beat Sosnoski to give the Voyageurs the 2-1 lead. In the final minute Brock would pull Sosnoski looking for the equalizer, but it was Elissa Bertuzzi adding the empty netter to secure the victory.
The Badgers will look to get in the win column October 10th at 7:15pm when they host Ryerson Rams at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
