ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University women's rugby team opened the OUA regular season with a 7-5 victory over the Toronto Varsity Blues Saturday afternoon at home.
Prior to the game, the Badgers held a moment of silence for Brock women's rugby teammate Margo
Taylor Ward who Brock lost after a year long battle with lukemia.
With Taylor in their hearts and TW patches on their sleeves in her remembrance, Brock came out on a high winning every battle in the trenches and hitting every Varsity Blues player hard that got the ball.
The Badgers would get on the scoreboard in the 28th minute when sophomore
Lauren Kniewasser pounded it in after a great second effort to make it 5-0. Senior
Emily Voisin would add the convert as Brock led 7-0 after 40 minutes.
In the second half, Toronto would look to answer, but it was the Badgers defense coming up big with a 10-minute goal line stance, thanks to a great team effort from the entire Badgers line.
With 10 minutes remaining, Toronto's Thang Phung would add a try after breaking away from two Brock defenders making it 7-5. The Varsity Blues would miss the convert as Brock held on for the two-point victory.
The Badgers return to action September 18th when they take on the Western Mustangs on the road. Brock will battle the Waterloo Warriors on September 21st at 3pm as part of the 2013 Brock Homecoming.
