TORONTO, Ont. - The Brock University women's soccer team (0-0-2 OUA) played to their second straight 0-0 draw to start the regular season as they held off the York Lions Monday afternoon on the road.
The Lions outshot Brock 7-1 in the opening half, but it was the Badgers
Kelly Miller (Brantford, Ont.) getting one of the best scoring chances of the game with less than a minute left in the half, as she drilled a shot from inside the 18 yard box that was stopped by York's senior goalkeeper Sarah Fiorini.Â
In the second half, York outshot Brock 5-1, but is the stellar play of the midfield and the back four defenders, highlighted by the play of senior defender
Sara Vitaterna (Niagara Falls, Ont.) and freshman
Richelle Boekestyn (Jordan Station, Ont.)Â who were outstanding in the backfield.Â
"This was another well deserved point," said Brock women's soccer head coach
John Durish. "Right from the forwards back to the goalkeeper played an excellent 90 minutes. This young team has a lot of grit and determination which we will continue to build on moving forward this season."
In goal, freshman
Jenna Vasiliaskas (Burlington, Ont.) played strong in her OUA debut registering eight saves for her first career shutout.Â
The Badgers return to action on September 4th when they take on the Laurier Golden Hawks on the road. Brock then has a five-game homestand beginning September 8th at 1:00pm when they host the McMaster Marauders.
Notes: I made the road trip on the bus with the twins today. They have been going to Brock games since they were born but this was their first road trip on the bus with the team. So many great student-athletes at Brock University that they look up. Both the men's and women's teams engaged them as part of the Brock Badgers Family.Â
