ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The Brock University women's volleyball team (5-9 OUA West) fell in four sets (15-25, 19-25, 25-19, 23-25) to the No. 8 ranked York Lions (11-2 OUA East) on Saturday afternoon in the Bob Davis Gymnasium.
The Badgers dropped the first two sets (25-15, 25-19) to give a potent Lions' lineup a big 2-0 advantage.
Brock picked up their game in the third set to hand York just their 10
th loss in a set this season with a 25-19 win to close the gap to 2-1 in favour of the Lions.
The Badgers were able to keep the momentum going in the fourth set, powering ahead in the early going, before York came roaring back to squeak away with a 25-23 win in a tightly contested 3-1 match victory.
Shenise Power (North Vancouver) and
Lucy McLay led the attack for Brock registering 12 and 11 kills respectively.
Maddie Brown (Scarborough, Ont.) and
Tori Stirling (Whitby, Ont.) followed up with seven kills apiece.
Lauren Stirling (Whitby, Ont.) continued to be an impressive leader for the Badgers offense collecting 34 assists, four kills and twelve digs.
Hayley Orr (London, Ont.) finished with a game high 21 digs.
Melissa Monkhouse led the offensive attack for the Lions picking up 15 kills, followed by Michelle Pierce with 10 kills. Kirsten Dillon's 38 assists moved her up to second in the OUA with a total of 465 assists, just 12 shy of leader Danielle Lenarduzzi from Windsor.
As a team, the Badgers registered 42 kills to go with 25 errors and 142 total attempts for a .120 hitting percentage. The Lions hit .230 in the win with 51 kills, 19 errors and a total of 139 attempts.
The Badgers will be on the road for four of their five remaining matches starting with a two-game road trip to Thunder Bay to battle with the Thunderwolves on Friday, January 24
th and Saturday, January 25
th.
