TORONTO, Ont. - The Brock University women's hockey team (8-13-2 OUA) had their playoff hopes come to an end Friday night as they dropped a 4-3 decision in overtime to the York University Lions (6-15-2 OUA) on the road.
York opened the scoring midway through the first period as Megan Finlay and Sarah Conway setup Courtney Weatherbie for her first goal of the season.
Just over a minute into the second period, Brock senior captain
Leigh Vanderveen (NOTL, Ont.) registeted her 12th goal of the season beating York netminder Megan Lee to tie the game 1-1. Senior
Brianne Veale (Sault Ste Marie, Ont.) and
Laura Neu (Ayr, Ont.) added the assists.
At the 12:02 mark of the second, Brock would go to work on the powerplay as Veale and Neu setup Vanderveen for her second goal of the night making it 2-1 Brock.
York's Kristen Barbara added a shorhanded marker midway through the third period to tie it 2-2. Amy Locke and Finlay added the helpers.
Brock would regain the one goal lead 3-2 at 17:39 as senior
Katie Howlett (Burlington, Ont.) added her fourth goal of the campaign. Neu and freshman
Kaileigh Grant (Cambridge, Ont.) were credited with the assists.
That lead was shortlived as 11 seconds later the Lions Finlay and Barbara found Andrea Joyce who beat Brock rookie netminder
Jenna Sosnoski (New Dundee, Ont.) tying the game 3-3 to send it to overtime.
2:56 into the overtime York's Kiri Langford would add the game winner ending Brock's second half of the season run and their chance of the playoffs.Â
In goal, Sosnoski registered 38 saves in the loss. The Lions Megan Lee collected 29 saves for the victory.
The Badgers end the 2013-14 season Saturday afternoon on the road against he UOIT Ridgebacks.
