THUNDER BAY, Ont. - The Brock University men's basketball team opened the second half of the regular season with a 76-73 road victory over the Lakehead Thunderwolves Friday night at the Thunderdome.
The host Thunderwolves jumped out to an early 8-2 lead and held just a one point lead, 23-22 after 10 minutes. The two teams played an even second quarter with Lakehead holding onto a 48-44 lead at the half.
To open the third quarter, rookie
Johneil Simpson (Toronto, Ont.) knocked down three straight field goals, tying the game 51-51 with 8:20 left in the quarter. There would be three more ties in the quarter, before Brock closed out the third with a 6-3 run leading 66-63 at the end of 30 minutes.
In the final quarter, the two teams would add just 10 points each, but it was Brock sophomore
Nolan Mackenzie (Oakville, Ont.) and junior
Zachary Angelini (Hamilton, Ont.)Â combining for a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line in final minute to secure the victory.
Brock had four players in double digits led by Simpson who led all scorers with a game-high 26 points, highlighted by 4-for-6 from beyond the arc. Angelini contributed with 14 points including a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line.
Matt Marshall (Burlington, Ont.) chipped in with 12 points and six rebounds while
Yusuf Ali (Toronto, Ont.) finished with 11 points in the victory.Â
For Lakehead, Jamar Coke added 12 points off the bench to lead the way. Bacarius Dinkins and Alex Robichaud collected 11 points each in the loss.
For the game, the Badgers went 27-for-67 (40.3%) from the field including 7-for-18 (38.9%) from beyond the arc. They were also 15-for-18 (83.3%) from the charity stripe. The Thunderwolves shot 49.1% (28-for-57) from the field, 38.9% (7-for-18) from long range and 83.3% (10-for-12) from the free throw line.
The two teams are back in action Saturday night. Tip-off is 8pm at the Thunderdome.
