OSHAWA, Ont. - The Brock University women's hockey team (1-1-0 OUA) ended the opening weekend with a 3-1 road victory over the UOIT Ridgebacks Saturday night at the Campus Ice Centre.
The Ridgebacks opened the scoring 3:45 into the opening period as Chelsea Ball set Nicole Gorda for her first goal of the season.
With 6:24 remaining in the first period, captain
Laura Neu (Ayr, Ont.) and
Brittany Gillmor (St. George Brant, Ont.) would setup
Alex Finlayson (Etobicoke, Ont.) for her second career goal.
The Badgers took a 2-1 lead with less than a minute to go in the second period, as
Kimberly Brown (Toronto, Ont.) recorded her first career regular season goal on the powerplay. Amanda Ieradi (Stittsville, Ont.) and
Lisa Buratynski (Ajax, Ont.) added the assists.
Brock would secure the victory with empyty netter from
Sophie Herbert (Ryde Isle of Wight, UK) with 44 seconds remaining in regulation.
In goal, Brock rookie
Jensen Murphy (Kingston, Ont.) turned aside 21 of 22 shots she faced for her first career victory. UOIT starter Cassie Charette recorded 22 saves in the loss.
The Badgers return to action for three straight home games versus the Nipissing Lakers (Oct. 17 - 2:15pm), Laurentian Voyageurs (Oct. 18 - 2:15pm) and Laurier Golden Hawks (Oct. 24 - 7:15pm).
