ST. CATHARINES, Ont. - The Brock University women's soccer team defeated the Guelph Gryphons by the score of 1-0 on their first game on the new turf field Saturday afternoon.
The Badgers played an even first half, with both goaltenders making some key saves.
Midway through the opening half Brock rookie starter
Lauren MacCulloch (Welland, Ont.) robbed Guelph striker Krista Lopoyda right on the doorstep. Late in the first half, Brock would get a free kick from just yards out, but it was Guelph starter Holly Miller coming up with a spectacular save to keep it scoreless after 45 minutes.
In the 54th minute third year striker
Olivia Schramowsky (London, Ont.) would record her third goal of the season as she beat Miller for the 1-0 lead.
In the 58th minute, Guelph's Daniel Canhoto would drill one of the crossbar, as Brock held onto the 1-0 lead.
Guelph would look for the equalizer late in the contest, but it was MacCulloch standing strong as she turned aside all nine shots she faced for the shutout. Miller recorded five saves in the loss.
On the backend, it was the Badgers trio of third year
Alicia Robinson (Dundas, Ont.) and rookies
Natasha Susman (Oakville, Ont.),
Sarah Krause (Brampton, Ont.) playing solid the entire 90 minutes.
The Badgers return to action October 10th on the road versus the Windsor Lancers before travelling north October 17th & 18th against the Algoma Thunderbirds.Â
