Kingston, Ont. - The No.4 ranked Brock University men's basketball team (3-1 OUA) suffered their first loss of the regular season as they dropped an 87-81 decision to the Queen's Gaels Saturday night on the road.
The Badgers led 26-27 after one quarter and went up by as many as 14 points with just over two minutes left in the first half. Brock led 47-39 after 20 minutes.
In the first two minutes of the third quarter, Queen's put together a 7-0 run, to bring it within three points, 49-46. The Badgers would go up by six points with four minutes left in the quarter, before the Gaels battled back with a 10-4 run, to tie the game 60-60 after three quarters.
Queen's opened the fourth quarter with a 7-0 run, leading 67-60 with eight minutes left in regulation. Brock answered right back with a 10-0 run of their own, leading 70-67 with 5:44 remaining. With just over one minute left in regulation the score was tied 81-81.
Queen's closed out the game going 6-for-8 from the charity stripe as they knocked off the No. 4 ranked Badgers.
Brock had three players in double digits led by
Matt Marshall (Burlington, Ont.) who led all scorers with 26 points and 10 rebounds for the double-double.
Dani Elgadi (Waterloo, Ont.) contributed with 22 points and 12 rebounds while
Johneil Simpson (Toronto, Ont.) added 17 points and five rebounds in the loss.
The Gaels finished the game with five players in double digits led by Sukhpreet Singh, Tanner Graham and Patrick Street who recorded 18, 17 and 16 points respectively.
For the game, the Badgers shot 44.4% (32-for-72) from the field, 35.0% (7-for-20) from beyond the arc and 83.3% (10-for-12) from the charity stripe The Gaels finished the contest shooting 52.6% (30-for-57) from the floor, going 7-for-16 (43.8%) from beyond from downtown. They also went to the free throw line 29 times going 20-for-29 (69.0%).
The Badgers return to action next weekend November 27-28 for their OUA home opener against the Lakehead Thunderwolves. Friday nights game is at the Bob Davis Gymnasium and tickets are still available for Saturday night's game at the Meridian Centre. Ticket for Saturday are available through ticketmaster.ca.
