ST. CATHARINES, Ont. – The Brock University women's rugby team (0-2-1 OUA) added a last minute try as they tied the Waterloo Warriors 22-22 Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
"We have been working on skill development and our catch pass lately, and the girls were able to apply it on the field today," said women's rugby head coach Rebecca Delaney.Brock came blazing out of the gates early, with Chelsea Braithwaite (Brampton, Ont.) scoring off a penalty in Waterloo's end to make the score 5-0.
Amarije Barnes (Brampton, Ont.) would score shortly after to make it 10-0 on a nice rush down the field. Waterloo would go on to convert a penalty kick and a try for 10 points to tie it.
Nearing the end of the first, Brock would answer with an aggressive attack for
Kayla Hutchinson (Erin, Ont.) to score.
In the second half, Waterloo opened the scoring after a turnover on back pass fumble. They would convert it to tie gameplay up at 17-17.
The pressure continued from the Warriors scoring on a end-to-end rush to make it 22-17, but the Badgers would not back down with third year winger
Kelsey Smith (Kingston, Ont.) scoring in the final minute to tie it. They were unable to convert the try.
"It was really nice to see the heart of the team. Today's game was all heart and you could not only see it, but feel it." – said fifth year student and women's rugby veteran,
Katie Faust.
