Box Score
ST. CATHARINES, ON - The Brock University women's hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision to the University of Toronto Varsity Blues Saturday night at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.
Prior to the game the Niagara Women's Recreational hockey league honoured one of their original players Oonagh Hastie who recently lost a battle with cancer. In memory of Oonagh the NWRHL established an annual bursary to be awarded to a player on the Brock Women's hockey team.
Oonagh was an integral part of the Niagara Women's Recreational hockey league and a valued friend. She was a very good athlete who excelled at any sport she played and an amazing teammate who made playing the game fun.The first ever recipient of the bursary was Brock assistant captain
Brenna Murphy (Odessa, ON). Like Oonagh, Murphy was the player the team felt exhibits the most sportsmanship and is considered to be a leader on and off the ice. She is the player the team looks to when they are behind, the player who can score the big goal to start the rally and the one who can help the team learn from a defeat and play on despite the score.
The Badgers opened the scoring 7:37 into the opening period as
Maggie Spratt-Mallick (Caledonia, ON) setup
Bronwyn O'Neill (Erinsville, ON) for her third goal of the season.Toronto answered back with two late goals just 21 seconds apart at the end of the first period. At 18:22 on the powerplay Sonja Weidenfelder added her ninth goal of the season with Rebecca Bourgeois and Kristi Riseley adding the assists. Kiyono Cox would give the Varsity Blues the 2-1 lead at 18:43 as she buried a shot past Brock rookie starter
Jensen Murphy (Kingston, ON).
Brock would cut the game to one goal at 5:54 of the third period as
Christina Ieradi (Maple, ON) put it past Toronto goaltender
Valencia Yordanov for her fourth goal.
Sophie Herbert (Ryde Isle of Wight, UK) and O'Neill added the assists. At the 7:09 mark of the third, the Varsity Blues Garnham added an insurance marker wit her second goal of the night.Â
In goal, Jensen registered 26 saves in the loss.
Yordanov turned aside 22 of 24 shots she faced for the victory.
The Badgers are on the road next weekend as they do the OUA northern swing against Nipissing and Laurentian January 30-31.
