The No. 2 ranked Brock University men's basketball team defeated the Queen's Gaels by the score of 91-86 Saturday night on the road.
Early in the opening quarter, Queen's put together a 10-3 run to go up 16-8 midway through. Brock would cut the lead to three after an 11-5 run of their own to make it 24-21 Queen's with less a minute left in the first.
The two teams would continue to exchange baskets until Brock took a 41-40 lead with 3:10 left in the first half. Brock closed out the second quarter with a 5-2 run, leading 46-42 at the half.
In the third quarter, the Badgers would go up 67-61 with less than two minutes left, before the Gaels closed out the quarter with six straight points to make it a two-point game 67-65 in favour of Brock after 30 minutes.
Brock would put together a 7-0 run in the opening three minutes of the fourth quarter to take a 74-65 lead. The Badgers would make it 81-72 midway through the quarter, before Queen's offense answered with a 14-6 run to make it a one point game 87-86 with 12 seconds left. Brock would knock down four straight free throws in the final seconds to secure the win.
Johneil Simpson had a career game registering 33 points including a career best 7-for-13 from beyond the arc.
Dani Elgadi and
Cassidy Ryan both contributed with double-doubles. Elgadi added 20 points and 11 rebounds while Ryan collected 17 points and 10 boards. Rounding out the Brock leaders was
Tyler Brown who chipped in with 10 points and seven assists.
Leading the Queen's offense was Jaz Bains who recorded 22 points and seven assists. Also in double figures was Quinton Gray with 19, Jesse Graham 15 and Tanner Graham 14.
For the game, Brock shot 39.7% (31-for-78) from the field, 23.5% (8-for-34) from three-point range and 80.8% (21-for-26) from the charity stripe. Queen's went 30-for-65 (46.2%) from the floor, 5-for-22 (22.7%) from downtown and 21-for-25 (84.0%) from the free throw line.
The Badgers will battle the No. 7 ranked Ryerson Rams Wednesday night at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto.
