Guard Miranda Smith filled up the scoresheet, but the Brock Badgers women's basketball team opened the season with a 63-51 loss to Laurier at home on Friday.

Smith, a Medical Sciences student from Welland, led all players with 14 points and she recorded five rebounds and three steals.

Melissa Tatti and Courtney McPherson each added 11 points. Tatti pulled off seven steals.

Laurier used size in the second half to create space inside the paint and Brock wasn't able to generate any open shots.

"I think we brought the effort in the first half on defence, unfortunately we fell short in the second," said Smith. "We're looking forward to bringing the energy and effort in tomorrow's game against Guelph."

Up next, the Badgers (0-1) host Guelph (1-0) on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 6 p.m.
