Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Jacob Smith

Smith, Badgers stun Lions

Miranda Smith scored 17 points and the Brock Badgers slipped by the York Lions 75-73 at Bob Davis Gymnasium on Saturday to cap off the first half of the OUA women's basketball season.

Smith connected on five three-pointers and added two assists and a steal.

"Overall it was a hard fought team effort," said Smith. "Lots of positives, great energy came from each and every one of us. It was a great way to finish off the year."

The Badgers improve to 4-7.

Kristin Gallant added 17 points along with five rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals.

Brock stormed out early against the Lions, using York's shooting troubles to capitalize on every opportunity both offensively and defensively.

Brock was on top of the Lions 24-13 heading into the second quarter.

York fought back in the second once they got their shooting going, outscoring the Badgers 20-8. Both teams found consistency defensively and offensively. Going into the final 10 minutes, Brock trailed 51-49.

Based off of the performances of both teams throughout the third quarter, it seemed like the final 10 minutes could go either way, and Brock showed just how undecided the outcome was late in the game as Smith and the Badgers strung together three-pointers to cheers of the crowd, and give Brock the victory.

The women's regular season is complete for 2018, but they return to the hardcourt on Jan. 5 as they take a road trip to London to face the Western Mustangs followed by a trip to Laurier on Jan. 9 to take on their opponents from the start of the year.
