The Brock ball hockey team captured their third straight Ontario University Ball Hockey Championship as they defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks by the score of 6-3 Sunday at the BallHockey.com Arena.
With the championship, Brock Sports has now captured eight championships in 2017-18, tying the school record from 2004-05.
Laurier opened the scoring seven minutes into the first period as Kyle Thomas buried a slap shot past Brock starter
Patrick Martin.
Brock's
Anthony Loveless, a member of Team Canada, evened the game 1-1 midway through the first period on the powerplay, as he buried a shot past Laurier goaltender Thomas Mitchell.
Andrew Jegg added the lone assist. The Badgers went up 2-1 with 6:36 left in the first as
Blake Mezzarobba setup Loveless who drilled a slap shot from the point over the shoulder of Mitchell.
Brock would take a 3-1 lead with 7:57 remaining in the second period as Loveless and
Chris Grenier setup
Adam Kirchmayer for the shorthanded marker.
Laurier would cut the Brock lead to one, 3-2, with 11:15 left in the third period on a goal from Stefan Pullana.
Just 35 seconds later, the Badgers went up 4-2 with 10:40 left in the third period, as Loveless and Jegg setup Mezzarobba for his first goal of the game, which would prove to be the game-winner.
The Golden Hawks made it a one goal game with 3:53 left in regulation as Jason McElhinney and Trevor John setup Craig Rushton.
58 seconds later, the Badgers got a 2 on 1 started by a lead pass from Kirchmayer to Grenier who slid it across to
Deyn Rodrigues for the 5-3 lead. With just seven seconds left in regulation, Loveless would add an empty netter for the 6-3 victory.
For his five-point performance (3G, 2A), Loveless was named the Championship MVP.
In goal, Brock's Martin registered 22 saves for the victory. Laurier's Mitchell collected 36 saves in the loss.
