The Brock women's basketball team took the first game of a back-to-back meeting with the Algoma Thunderbirds during their annual Shoot for the Cure game by a score of 59-35 on Friday.
Kristin Gallant recorded an efficient night by shooting 50 per cent from the field to contribute 17 points along with six rebounds, an assist and three steals.
Brock's offence started off soundly and were able to contain rebounds defensively despite early foul trouble. Outmatching the Thunderbirds in their depth of scorers, the Badgers gained an early 17-10 lead.
Locking down the defensive principles that they were trying to solidify in the first quarter and playing smarter to avoid as many fouls, Brock held the Thunderbirds to just four points in the second quarter while they scored 12 points of their own.
Due to the defensive efforts and the consistent scoring, Brock pushed their lead to 29-14 going into the second half.
Algoma regained their offence in the third quarter, but couldn't catch Brock's 44-25 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.
Brock got some quality minutes from their rotation players, which gave the starters a rest.
Earning the victory put Brock one game below .500 at 8-9.
The Badgers look to pull within .500 when they host Algoma at Bob Davis Gymnasium on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 6 p.m. Get your tickets here.
