Stout defence, Lancers' keeper stymies Badgers

The Brock women's soccer team ran into a wall of a goalkeeper during their home opener at Brock Alumni Field versus the Windsor Lancers, which ended in a 1-1 draw on Sunday.

The Badgers peppered Lancers' keeper Lauren Gellner with quality chances, but only Erica D'Alesio found the back of the net when she fired in a shot through traffic from the top of the key.

Brock outshot Windsor 19-8.

10465"We created so many chances, but we just couldn't finish," said head coach Kevin Trethowan. "On another day this match could have ended 5-1."

The Badgers picked up their second draw this weekend after tying Waterloo 0-0 on Saturday.

Most of the match was an aerial battle.

"Our defenders set up the block well, but it was a lot of aircraft penguins going over," said Trethowan of the midfield.

First-year midfielder Ivana Kanisek controlled the middle of the pitch with energy and decisive effort, according to Trethowan.

"Kanisek played 70 minutes yesterday and 90 minutes today, which is pretty incredible for someone who is first year on the team," he said. "Good players will get into good positions and they will recognize triggers. Positioning is the most important thing."

Brock led 1-0 until Windsor's Jade Samping scored to tie the game up during the 44th minute.

"Mistakes. We didn't press the ball and it was crossed in, and we tried to head the ball back to the keeper," said Trethowan. "But it fell far too short and Marilena Spagnolo made a great first save and then we didn't react to the second ball, so it was three defensive errors one right after the other."

Up next, the Badgers (0-0-2) visit the Guelph Gryphons (2-0-0) on Friday, Sept. 6.
