The Brock men's basketball team held off the Western Mustangs in overtime by a score of 87-84 at Bob Davis Gymnasium on Jan. 15.
Aaron Golbourne and Tyler Brown each connected on free throws in the dying seconds of a foul-filled overtime frame as the Badgers secured their second consecutive win to improve to 7-6.
"We fought hard the whole game. Even when they went on a run we were able to stay composed and play through adversity," said forward Daniel Cayer, who recorded a game-high 10 rebounds. "This is something we've struggled with all year, so to see us fight back when things aren't going our way makes me excited for the future of this team."
Brock led 38-34 at halftime. The Mustangs made their comeback in the fourth quarter and led for most of the frame as Aaron Tennant hit a free throw to tie the game up 70-70 with 30 seconds remaining.
"What I saw on the court was another game where we fought and competed," said head coach Willy Manigat. "We are taking it one day at a time. I was happy that many others are stepping up when their numbers are called. Everyone has to be able to step in."
Noah LaPierre collected two key rebounds, however the Badgers couldn't find the mesh and the game descended into extra time where Brock outscored Western 17-14.
LaPierre scored a career-high 23 points and racked up seven rebounds, two steals and two assists. He shot 50 per cent from beyond the arc. Brown notched 10 points and contributed 12 assists.
Godsman Kwakwah registered 18 points and seven rebounds while Cayer chipped in 12 points. Golbourne finished with 10 points and Daniel Caldwell posted eight points and six boards.
For Western, Julian Walker led the Mustangs with 24 points.
The Badgers have a lot of positive momentum to build off of after this victory, including a win over Toronto at the Meridian Centre last Saturday.
"Definitely, the Meridian was a game to build off of, but it starts with coming to practice everyday with the mentality of getting better each day," added Cayer.
Up next, the Badgers (7-6) host the Windsor Lancers (7-6) on Saturday, Jan. 18 at Bob Davis Gymnasium as part of a doubleheader with the women's annual Shoot for the Cure game. All proceeds from the evening will be donated to the Canadian Cancer Society. The women's game begins at 6 p.m. and the men's game tips off at 8 p.m. Get your tickets here.
