Puentes, Badgers secure first win of the season

Alejandro Puentes scored a goal and assisted as the Brock men's soccer team captured its first win of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) season under the lights at Alumni Field on Friday, Oct. 1.

"The guys played well. They played for each other in front of a great crowd this evening," said head coach Erik Van Wissen. "They executed the game plan well. I couldn't be more proud of them."

In the first half, Brock created countless scoring chances, and the Badgers were rewarded with a penalty kick at the 12-minute mark.

"It felt like we came together as a team tonight. We moved the ball very well, and we put a lot of pressure on them, and after putting in that kind of work, you have to get a goal," said Puentes, a fourth-year Biological Sciences student from St. Catharines. "We had to make it happen."

Striker Michael Solomon rifled a shot, which rang off the post. The ball rebounded, and a Brock player was brought down during a clash in front of the net.

Puentes took the penalty kick and beat the diving Windsor keeper top left corner for the would-be game-winner.

"Our Ice Man, Alejandro, put it away on a nice penalty shot," said Van Wissen. "Alejandro is a special player. He's our guy in the middle who locks things down. Then, when he's in possession, he's able to create. We love to build off of his foot. He's a wonderful maestro."

Puentes assisted on Brock's second marker, credited to Daniel Buccianti, following a kick in from centre field. The ball was deflected following a collision in the air.

"We outworked the opposition in the midfield. We got to play a lot more with the ball and showcase our skills and what kind of team we are, but that is because of our defence," Puentes said. "The defence was amazing. They were a wall with our keeper."

Moments before, the Lancers desperately manufactured a quick counter-attack. However, centre-back Nolan Boesetti made a goal-saving slide tackle to preserve the clean sheet.

"Our captain came up with a timely tackle. Without that play, it could have brought the game level, but that slide kept us in the game," Van Wissen said.

Bosetti's tackle was the epitome of everything Brock managed to shut down on defence, which was stalwart throughout the match.

"The defence came up big. We made our tackles, won head balls and snuffed out most of their offensive chances," Van Wissen said. "I'm proud of our guys on the back end."

Brock outshot Windsor 15-6 as goalkeeper Alex May picked up the win in between the pipes. Solomon registered seven shots while Matthew Wnukowski tallied three, and Puentes posted two.

Next, the Badgers (1-1-1) travel to Windsor for a rematch with the Lancers (0-2-1) on Sunday, Oct. 3 at 4:15 p.m.
