City of Port Colborne ready to welcome Brock men's hockey team

The Brock men's hockey team will play an Ontario University Athletics (OUA) exhibition game in Port Colborne on Saturday, Oct. 23.

The Badgers will face off against the Windsor Lancers in front of minor hockey players and their families at Port Colborne's Vale Health & Wellness Centre. The puck drop is 3 p.m.

Brock men's hockey head coach Kevin Forrest said game day events which include minor players are a hit with both the spectators and players.

"It's an exciting game day event. The younger kids bring a lot of cheers and energy to the games, which carries over onto the ice and adds energy to both teams," Forrest said. "From our perspective, it's a great reminder of our own minor hockey days, and how much fun it was to watch higher level hockey with your teammates."

A limited number of free tickets are available for the general public and can be reserved by visiting portcolborne.ca. A majority of tickets are reserved for the Port Colborne Minor Hockey Association players and their families.

"Last year, hockey was almost non-existent, but it's back now, and we're hoping this game helps get our minor hockey players excited to be back on the ice by watching high-calibre hockey played right here on their home ice," said Port Colborne mayor Bill Steele.

Donations are also being accepted at the entrance in support of Port Colborne Minor Hockey to help support their players and coaches with training and development, equipment, and financial assistance.

The City of Port Colborne's COVID-19 protocols require any adult over the age of 18, and any youth over the age of 12, to be fully vaccinated. Proof of vaccination status, including photo ID, is required to gain access.

Spectators and attendees must wear a mask or face covering to enter the facility and throughout the hockey game. Face coverings may be removed to eat or drink if attendees are seated in their designated seats and are distanced six feet from individuals not in their household.

Children under the age of five are not required to wear a mask or face covering.

Individuals can provide proof of immunization by downloading or printing their vaccine receipt from the provincial booking portal https://covid19.ontariohealth.ca/ , or by calling the Provincial Vaccine Booking Line at 1-833-943-3900. Those with medical exemptions must provide proof as identified by the Province to access the facility.

"We're appreciative of the people of Port Colborne to invite us to play in their city and plan to put in a great effort on the ice for them," Forrest said.
