Brock women's rugby team advances to OUA semifinals

The Brock women's rugby team saved the best for last.

The Badgers completed the regular season on a high note by capturing their first win of the season with a commanding 59-0 road win over the York Lions.

The victory earned them a spot in Ontario University Athletics (OUA) semifinals versus Queen's on Saturday, Oct. 30. The game time is to be determined.

"This win is just what we needed going into playoffs next week," said first-year tight five Laura Brown. "The ladies and I are fired up and ready to play Queens. It's exciting to witness all of the hard work we've done in practice be shown on the field."

Brown scored the first two tries of her OUA career as Brock stormed out to an early lead and led 30-0 by halftime.

"Scoring those tries gave off such a great energy that left us all pumped for the rest of the game," added Brown. "I'm so happy to be playing with such a great group."

Daniella Michaud scored a try, a convert and booted two penalty kicks for a total of 13 points.

Miia Sorra tallied two tries while Loramhel Mateo, Aisha Ismail, Karenna Ottywill and Lane Hessels each added a try.

"Allowing zero points is as pleasing as our attack scoring 59," said head coach Mark Smerdon. "Tegan Teeple brought tenacious tackling on defence for the full 80 minutes. We named Laura Brown our Player of the Match because she showed great defence with numerous line breaks on attack, and of course scoring two tries."
