Win over Guelph snaps losing streak for Brock women's soccer squad

The Brock women's soccer team defeated the Guelph Gryphons 3-1 to snap a three-game losing streak at Alumni Field on Sunday, Oct. 24.

"This win means everything to us. We've been working hard, and we deserve it. We're a family, so we lose together, and we win together," said first-year centre midfielder Grace Tawil. "This was truly a group effort."

On Friday, Oct. 22, the Badgers lost 1-0 at Guelph.

"That loss was nothing to scoff at, but this win means everything to these student-athletes. They work hard. They don't give up," said head coach John Di Pasquale. "In all of our detail work, we see the behaviour of a team that's on the rise. We had a game plan, and they stuck to it."

Cerrina Toromoreno opened the scoring with a strike in the box just five minutes into the match. Guelph's Sydney Johnson replied in the 22nd minute.

The match remained tied 1-1 at the half.

"We flipped the switch in the second half, and we started to win our battles," Tawil said. "We wanted this win."

The game-winning goal was an own-goal by Guelph in the second-half following a scramble off a set-piece play. First-year defender Logan Baumhauer was credited with the goal.

"We're still growing offensively, so we spend a lot of time on those set pieces," said Di Pasquale. "The game had a bit of edge, but that's a sign that our athletes care. They're stepping in if someone takes a cheap shot."

First-year striker Sabrina Bisante sealed the win with an electric breakaway goal.

Brock goalkeeper Isabelle Newkirk earned the win in between the pipes with four saves as Guelph outshot Brock 12-9.

Next, the Badgers (2-6) host Waterloo (1-3-4) for their Senior Night at Alumni Field on Friday, Oct. 29 at 6 p.m. Brock will celebrate captain Lindsay Appleton and midfielders Arnelle Douglas and Cassandra Campanella.
