Brock women's rugby team ends campaign with playoff appearance

The 2021 season came to an end for the Brock women's rugby team on Saturday, Oct. 30.

In Kingston, the Badgers battled the No. 2 nationally-ranked Queen's Gaels in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) semifinal. The Badgers lost 78-8.

"Not the score we wanted, but we still accomplished some big positives in our play. Consistency was our problem today," said head coach Mark Smerdon. "At times are women play as well as any team in the league, so they know they can do it. This is a part of the process. Now, we have to work on the consistency."

In the first half, the Badgers stood tall on defence combined with unrelenting attacks, resulting in a penalty goal for three points kicked by Daniella Michaud. Loramhel Mateo scored the Badgers' lone try.

Second-year back row Megan Dyer delivered tough tackles and stout defence while senior back three Lane Hessels was named Player of the Match for outstanding tackles and heads-up plays on the counter-attack.

"Two-thirds of our team consists of first-year players, so they are gaining valuable experience," Smerdon said. "The team is ahead of where we projected they would be as far as the style of play. Now, we will use the off-season to get physically stronger and faster, to back up that style of play."

The Badgers honoured their senior players with gifts and well wishes before boarding the bus to Kingston. The Brock women's rugby senior players include Madison Hanewich, Loramhel Mateo, Livia Gubco, Alexandra Azzopardi, Miia Sorra, Natalie Dzamba, Lane Hessels and Tegan Teeple.
