The Brock women's hockey team paid tribute to National Aboriginal Veterans Day and Remembrance Day before its home opener versus Laurier at Seymour-Hannah Arena on Thursday, Nov. 11.
For a ceremonial puck drop, the Badgers welcomed Sergeant Mabel James of the Lincoln and Welland Regiment and her daughter, Grace, of the St. Catharines Female Hockey Association Jr. Badgers.
Sergeant James, who has more than 33 years of experience with the Canadian Army, played a pair of bugle calls: Last Post, followed by a moment of silence, and the Reveille, before a ceremonial puck drop with both team captains.
In a close contest, Brock narrowly lost 1-0 to the Laurier Golden Hawks. Badgers netminder Aline Hironaka made 29 saves.
Hawks goalie Cohen Myers made 14 saves for the shutout and backstopped Laurier to its first win of the season. Emily Visser scored the lone goal midway through the second period.
Brock (2-1) looks to bounce back when they travel to Waterloo for a rematch with Laurier (1-2) on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 3 p.m.
