Maplethorpe powers Badgers past Mustangs

Winning boosts morale, but winning on the road can provide unique leverage in this year's edition of the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) 's regular-season schedule format.

The Brock women's hockey team made the first move in a series with the Western Mustangs as they skated away with a 2-1 victory in London on Friday, Nov. 19.

The schedule, designed with COVID-19 safety measures in mind, pits teams against each other in a home-and-home series, so tactically, teams are getting an authentic look at each other's strategies and idiosyncrasies.

"We put in a lot of pre-scout, and there's always strategy involved, but when playing the same team back to back, you can get much more detailed," said head coach Margot Page. "That can be a blessing and a curse."

The Badgers will clash with the Mustangs again at Seymour-Hannah Arena on Sunday, Nov. 21, at 5:15 p.m.

"Getting three points in another barn is always a good feeling," said third-year forward Cassidy Maplethorpe. "Points on the road give us momentum, which is crucial leading into our home game on Sunday. We have a great team atmosphere, and I'm excited to keep this energy flowing throughout the season."

Maplethorpe scored two goals as captain Kaitlyn Colonna, Emma Irwin, and Allison Stevenson each assisted.

Her second goal, which was an empty-netter in the third, proved to be the winner.

"We had a hard forecheck that was initiated by Stevo (Stevenson). The puck popped out of the corner, and I took it around the net," Maplethorpe said. "The net was empty, so I tossed the puck out in from, hoping for a lucky bounce and ended up getting one."

Western will look to solve Brock's penalty kill unit, which shined on Friday night as the Badgers dispelled all five of the Mustangs' power-play attempts.

"Our penalty kill players were patient tonight. They didn't overextend and get caught out of position, which is what a power-play tries to make them do," said assistant coach Brad Nicholson. "They filled the shooting lanes and blocked shots without hesitation."

Late in the third period, goaltender Tiffany Hsu was on the verge of posting her second consecutive shutout until the Mustangs pulled their goalie favouring the extra attacker and scored a goal with two seconds remaining.

Hsu made 19 saves for the win.
