The No. 6-ranked Brock Badgers celebrated its 2019-20 women's basketball team with a 86-63 victory over the Windsor Lancers at Bob Davis Gymnasium on Saturday, Nov. 20.
The Brock women's basketball team held a special pre-game ceremony before tipoff to honour its 2019-20 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) championship-winning team, including their historic run to the U SPORTS gold medal game.
In 2020, the Badgers captured their first provincial title since 1983 and their first Critelli Cup since the trophy was renamed in honour of former Brock basketball coach and Assistant Athletic Director Chris Critelli.
The presentation included OUA awards, team photo plaques and a visit from a special guest, Chris Critelli, who posed for photos with each team member.
The presentation was a surreal moment, said senior forward Samantha Keltos, a vital member of that championship team.
"It was unbelievable just because it's been so long. I haven't seen some of those women since then because they've graduated during the pandemic," Keltos said. "It was cool to have the whole team back together for that ceremony."
After trailing 34-32 at halftime, the Badgers entered the third quarter with aggressive drives to the basket and staunch defence.
"Windsor was taking liberties with their pressure, picking us up at full court, and they were doing that because we weren't punishing it," said head coach Mike Rao. "At the half, we adjusted and just started attacking with layups and started sharing the ball. It was good basketball to watch in the second half."
In the third quarter, the Badgers lit up the scoreboard with 30 points to take a commanding 62-48 lead.
Third-year guard Ivana Twumasi finished by leading the Badgers with 25 points. She also added six assists, four steals and three rebounds. She went nine-for-nine from the free-throw line.
Madalyn Weinert tallied 14 points and six rebounds, while Keltos recorded a double-double with 13 points and 12 boards, including five blocks.
Mackenzie Robinson scored 11 points and nine rebounds and chipped in four assists as Jenneke Pilling contributed 10 points and five assists.
Next, the Badgers (5-0) host the Guelph Gryphons (3-1) on Wednesday, Nov. 24, at Bob Davis Gymnasium. The tipoff is 6 p.m. Get your tickets here.
