Lawrence's big fourth quarter keeps No. 4 Badgers undefeated at the break

The No. 4 Brock women's basketball team remains undefeated halfway through the season.

Third-year guard Victoria Lawrence scored 15 points in the fourth quarter as the Badgers held off the Guelph Gryphons 75-67 on the road in their last regular-season game before the holiday break.

Brock, the top-ranked team in Ontario University Athletics (OUA), leads the league with a 7-0 record.

"That was the toughest game we've had all year," said head coach Mike Rao from the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre. "This is a tough building to play in."

Lawrence and fifth-year forward Mackenzie Robinson each led the Badgers with 15 points. In addition, the duo combined for seven steals. Fifth-year forward Samantha Keltos registered a game-high eight rebounds in 24 minutes of action.

Brock held a slim lead, 34-31, at halftime. However, the lead changed hands six times as Guelph led by six points late in the fourth quarter.

"We responded with energy. When one player scored or used our defensive stops to transition into scoring, we hyped each other up," said Lawrence, a Psychology student from Ottawa. "Each possession, we started sharing the ball more, and that was the key to our win."

Keltos left the game briefly with an injury late in the third quarter before returning in the fourth.

Lawrence subbed in and took over the game when she stepped onto the court. In just 10 minutes, Lawrence lit up the scoreboard for 15 points.

"Victoria turned the game around for us. She plays exceptional defence and was very good for us today," Rao said. "She was unstoppable."

Lawrence read the defence like an open book as she made four steals, including a highlight-reel moment where she parlayed a steal into a three-point dagger.

"My defence is a key point to my game," Lawrence said. "I have good instincts when I should go for the steal or be in the right position to get a defensive stop."

Keltos, who finished with 13 points and three blocks, returned in the final frame for six minutes. Third-year guard Jenneke Pilling also scored 13 points.

The Badgers battled with the Gryphons in a tough third quarter. Brock began to wrestle momentum away from Guelph when Robinson hit a pair of three-pointers.

"Not only my three, but Sam, Vic and Jenn each hit a deep one to help shift our momentum and energy, which were lacking at times," Robinson said. "This win was important because Guelph is one of the toughest teams we'll face in our division. We're feeling good and starting to click as a unit going into the new year 7-0."

The Badgers (7-0) return to action on Jan. 14, 2022 at Waterloo.
