Balanced scoring lifts Badgers over Hawks for triumphant home opener

The Brock men's basketball team made a triumphal return to Bob Davis Gymnasium on Wednesday, Nov. 3.

The Badgers defeated the Laurier Golden Hawks 98-77 in their first Ontario University Athletics (OUA) regular-season home game since Jan. 29, 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic cancelled the 2020-21 season.

"It feels good to be back. I'm never going to take that for granted again," said head coach Willy Manigat. "In the past, I would have said this was just another game, we've had preseason, but after 19 months, we're just happy to see the season begin. It's refreshing to host a game and for us to kick off the OUA season."

Bob Davis Gym was sold out by reaching their 400 capacity limit before tipoff.

The game also marked the regular-season debut for fifth-year guard Emmanuel Owoo-toah, who joined the Badgers in 2019 before being sidelined with various injuries, and the pandemic last season.

"It was surreal, to be honest. This has been a long time coming. I've had to overcome a lot of obstacles, and injuries, to be out here tonight. This is a memory I'm going to remember forever," said Owoo-toah, who recorded nine points and four assists in 16 minutes of action.

The Badgers enjoyed a balanced scoring attack as seniors Godsman Kwakwah and Daniel Caldwell and second-year forward Asare Otchere each scored 15 points.

"Balance is what we're always going to be about as a team," Manigat said. "Everything is about equal opportunity for our team, and the guys are learning to play the game the right way by sharing the basketball. Everyone needs to be a master in their role. We're starting on the right track."

Brock won every quarter and led 46-29 at halftime. They shot 57 per cent (40-for-70) from the floor and connected on nine three-point shots (45 per cent).

Caldwell and Otchere each snagged nine and eight rebounds, respectively. Daniel Cayer poured in 14 points and dished out eight assists, while Isaiah Bujdoso netted 12 points.

For Laurier, Ali Sow led the Hawks with 30 points.

"The sky's the limit for this team. I don't think we have a ceiling," Owoo-toah said. "We have a lot of pieces we can put together to make a beautiful picture, so we're going to continue working each day to surpass our potential."

Next, the Badgers (1-0) face off against the Golden Hawks (0-1) again in Waterloo on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 6 p.m.
