Brock women's basketball team wins home opener

The Brock women's basketball team won their home opener over the Laurier Golden Hawks 70-36 at Bob Davis Gymnasium on Wednesday, Nov. 3.

Madalyn Weinert, a first-year Medical Sciences student, scored 15 points in her Ontario University Athletics (OUA) debut.

"It was super exciting. It was fun and great to be back on the floor after so long having no live competition," said Weinert, a St. Catharines native. "Playing in front of friends and family adds to the excitement."

Weinert completed a double-double performance by collecting 10 rebounds. She also chipped in four assists and shot 43 per cent.

"That was a fantastic debut for Maddy. She's a hustle player at both ends of the floor. Maddy works, works and works. I like her energy," said head coach Mike Rao. "I knew she was good, but I didn't know she was this good. Maddy has exceeded expectations."

Senior forward Samantha Keltos led the team in scoring with a double-double of her own, consisting of 17 points and 16 rebounds.

After trailing by three points in the first quarter, Brock took the lead into halftime by a score of 30-20.

"After that first quarter, we got our feet back under us and started moving the ball the way we know we can," Weinert said. "Coach Rao has been pushing for us to move the ball as much as possible. It kick-started our offence."

Ivana Twumasi scored 11 points and Nicole Venhuizen added 10 rebounds.

Next, the Badgers (1-0) travel to Waterloo to play Laurier (0-1) on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 4 p.m.
