Cassidy Maplethorpe scored two goals as the Brock women's hockey team defeated the Windsor Lancers 3-2 on the road in overtime on Saturday, Nov. 6.
The Badgers are 2-0 to start the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) season.
Maplethorpe scored the game-winner less than a minute into overtime. Emma Irwin earned the assist.
"It was a tough game all around. Very physical, and we faced lots of adversity with some unfortunate calls," said Maplethorpe, a third-year forward. "Emotions were running high all game, but we battled right until the buzzer and didn't give up. Earning that extra point highlights our resilience and determination. I feel great knowing I'm part of a team with such heart and diligence."
Maplethorpe opened the scoring in the final seconds of the first period before Windsor tied it up in the second.
The Lancers took the lead midway through the third.
"We were eager to tie it up. Our team has a lot of heart, and we weren't giving up until the buzzer," Irwin said.
A second-year forward, Irwin tied the game up at 17:30 of the third on a sharp pass from Madison Cronkwright.
"We were coming down on a three-on-two after a breakout, and I saw a lot of space in the high slot with Cronkwright bringing the puck down the boards," Irwin said. "Cronkwright made an amazing pass to me in the slot, and I was able to get the puck in the net. That goal was as a great team effort."
First-year goaltender Aline Hironaka made 26 saves for her second consecutive win in net.
Allison Stevenson, Camie Matteau Rushbrook and Bailey Brooks each tallied an assist.
Brock outshot Windsor 30-26.
"Coming out of the opening weekend with five points is a great feeling. The atmosphere of our team this year is unmatched, and I think it shows on the ice," Maplethorpe said. "We earned every point this weekend, with a great comeback and lots of heart. I'm excited to see what the future holds with this group."
