Solomon, Brock men's soccer earn 1-1 draw

The Brock men's soccer team opened the 2021 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) campaign with a 1-1 draw during homecoming at Western University on Friday, Sept. 24.

"Our players put in a good performance," said head coach Erik Van Wissen. "We went down early in the match, but we maintained our composure, and soon after, we levelled with a nice individual effort from Michael Solomon."

The Badgers were on their heels early as the Western Mustangs scored three minutes into the match.

Just seven minutes later, Solomon, a first-year striker from Niagara Falls, found the ball and turned the defender before placing a sharp strike in the bottom corner of the Western net to tie the match.

"We had to stay organized with the opposing crowd on the road at Western," said Solomon, a Kinesiology student. "We conceded an early goal, so we needed a big play to get us back into the game. Shoutout to everyone on a great team effort for our first game of the year."

Solomon recorded three shots while forward Michael DiMaurizo added a shot.

The Brock defence and keeper Alex May held down the fort the rest of the way as Western outshot Brock 9-4 in front of an energetic crowd.

"The game was fast-paced and aggressive, and we struggled at times to manage the flow of the game," Van Wissen said. "We'll look forward to reviewing the game tape and preparing for our rematch here on our home turf Sunday."

The Badgers delivered five corners; the Mustangs registered a pair.

Brock (0-0-1) will face the Western Mustangs (0-0-1) again at Alumni Field in St. Catharines on Sunday, Sept. 26, at 3:15 p.m.
