Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Stephen Leithwood

Late goal the deciding factor in battle between Badgers, Mustangs

A late goal lifted the visiting Western Mustangs to a 1-0 win over the Brock men's soccer team at Alumni Field on Sunday, Sept. 26.

"It was an unfortunate result for Brock this evening. We were hoping for a bit better, but there are some good takeaways from today's game," said head coach Erik Van Wissen. "We'll review the tape and move forward as a team."

Western's lone goal by Luc Coulombe came against the run of play with less than 10 minutes remaining.

Brock dominated possession as they controlled the ball the rest of the way and unrelinquished zone time in Western's end. However, they couldn't manufacture the equalizer.

"We fought as a team offensively and defensively for all 90 minutes, leaving it all on the field and just falling short of the win we felt was in reach," said captain Nolan Bosetti, a second-year Kinesiology student. "That desire to win the game and every play will help us for the upcoming games."
Alex May penalty kick save
Brock keeper Alex May saves a penalty kick vs. Western.

In the 59th minute, Brock goalkeeper Alex May made a spectacular save to deny a penalty kick by Western's Ehsan Hirji.

"The crowd reacted like we scored a goal on that big save. We're very proud of May there. He stood tall and came up with a big save at an important moment in the game," Van Wissen said.

Victor Kariuki, Matthew Wnukowski, Luca Ragagnin and Christian Ferraro each contributed a shot.

Brock and Western each recorded four shots and three corners each.

"We played a strong game, and sometimes the game just doesn't go our way, but in a short season like this one, we have to keep our heads up," Bosetti said. "We'll learn from this game and focus on our next upcoming match."

The Badgers (0-1-1) play their second consecutive match in the home confines of Alumni Field when they host the Windsor Lancers (0-1-1) on Friday, Oct. 1 at 6:15 p.m.
