Bisante powers Badgers offence in season opener

First-year winger Sabrina Bisante was at the heart of the Brock Badgers' offence in London on Friday, Sept. 24.

Bisante scored her first university career goal during a 4-2 loss to the Western Mustangs to open the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) women's soccer season.

Bisante scored a goal and added an assist to give the Badgers the lead twice before the Mustangs pulled away late in the match.

Brock opened the scoring midway through the first half when Bisante bolted down the wing and placed the ball through the Mustang defenders to find Erica D'Alesio in the box.

D'Alesio, a second-year midfielder, rifled the ball into the goal to give Brock a 1-0 lead before halftime.

"Sabrina is a real special player. I think she has a real bright career ahead of her," said head coach John Di Pasquale. "She's a great teammate, works hard, plays with a smile on her face and seems to be a threat every time she gets the ball."

The Mustangs tied the game up at the 57-minute mark, but Bisante restored the Badgers lead five minutes later with her first OUA marker.

"My goal was a bit of a blur, but from what I remember, I received the ball in the middle of the field, controlled it and took off running as fast as I could," said Bisante, a Teacher Education student from Caledon.

A pair of Western defenders began closing in, so Bisante passed to striker Drew Smith who immediately crossed it back.

"Drew crossed it in front of the net perfectly. It hit off my chest and went in," Bisante said. "Once they called it a goal, I felt excited and happy to be congratulated by my teammates."

Western's attack poured the shots on Brock keeper Emma Hendrie, who finished with six saves. Then the Mustangs found the back of the net for the game-winner in the 86th minute.

"All in all, it was a tough loss, but regardless of the game results, it felt good to be part of a team that feels like family," added Bisante.

Western managed six corner kicks to Brock's one.

"When our team looked to move the ball, it was a thing of beauty. It's always nice to see the things you work on in training come out in the game," Di Pasquale said. "We lost a bit of composure in the late phase of the game, which was unfortunate. I felt for them. Hopefully, we can bounce back on Sunday."

Up next, Brock (0-1) hosts Western (1-0) on Sunday, Sept. 26, at Alumni Field. The kickoff is 1 p.m.
